The Kyrie Irving situation is such a mess right now and nobody can help it. Not even Kyries’s best friend Kevin Durant. In fact, in his latest interview, you can literally feel KD’s desperation when talking about it.
Let me show you just how serious all of this is. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
First of all, for those of you that don’t know, the laws in New York, San Francisco and Toronto require everyone to be vaccinated in order to play. Rumors are that LA is also going to follow this. So in that situation, Kyrie would miss all 41 home games, plus 2 against the Knicks in MSG, and 4 more road games against the Clippers and Lakers in LA as well as the Warriors and the Raptors. That’s close to 50 games. And of course not even mentioning the playoffs, how would that work. So you see that right now this is a total chaos. And it doesn’t seem like Irving would cave in and take the shot.
So Durant was asked about all of this, and the response gave me absolutely no hope whatsoever.
\”I’m envisioning Kyrie being a part of our team. Maybe I’m just naïve, but that’s how I feel.
But everybody here has that confidence in themselves and our group, that if we keep doing it we can do something special.”
Wait, what?! The dude who’s literally his best friend and talks to him on the regular, says that he may be naive for expecting to see Kyrie with the team.
Let me translate this: in simplest terms to me this sounds like: I talked to him and there’s no way my guy is getting vaccinated so I really don’t know how we’re going to handle all of this.
And honestly I am losing hope that we will see him on opening night.
On one hand, Kyrie will lose almost 400 thousand dollars for every game that he will miss. Let me repeat the number again. 400 thousand dollars per game. To think that someone is ready to forfeit all that cash is unbelievable.
But at the same time if we’re being honest, if there’s 1 player who would do it, it’s Kyrie himself.
It’s not like he hasn’t made enough money, both from the NBA as well as endorsements.
Something tells me tho that money isn’t even a factor for him.
We’ve seen him being unapologetically himself and never shying away from doing things that he strongly believes in. Whether it’s the flat earth theory, or saging arenas before playing, or coming to the game like this.
Irving has his beliefs and sticks to them no matter how the media portraits him or what people say about him. So this would just be another aspect of it. Kyrie Irving’s complicated views of the world.
On media day however he said this on a zoom call since he couldn’t be there in person because of the regulations. He said:
\”Obviously, I’m not able to be present there today, but that doesn’t mean I’m putting any limits on the future for me being able to join the team.\”
So for all of us that really want to see him out on the court, I’m holding on to this quote as a symbol that the door may still be open and that there is a chance he gets the shot and is able to play.
