Mr. Julien Nenault is the lecturer for CrossCulture Management at VNUK, one of the IBM modules. At a university like VNUK, we believe that it is important to gain an understanding of the wider business world, and the approaches that managers from other cultures take to reach their objectives. With this understanding, students can prepare themselves effectively for when they go into the workplace and may have to work with people from all different cultures.

Career in Business Management
A business manager is a person who manages the business affairs of an individual, institution, organisation, or company. Personally, I saw my own position as a business manager as somewhat akin to a key account manager, tracking, driving, maintaining and sourcing business for my company. Depending on what you want to specialise in, your role can be as far away from marketing as possible, with keeping the company values in the forefront of your emails. This is the case if you are not working as a business manager in marketing, of course, typically that role is labelled a brand manager.
So as a business manager, as per my personal role, was to maintain key vendors and clients, keeping them happy and informed with respect to ongoing and prospective forecasting on projects. Depending on what sector you a be in, this could be a procurement heavy position with a key emphasis on sales. Having a specialisation in a particular field, such as sales, marketing, public relations or finance aids in efficiency, yet despite the usual academic qualities of a business manager, business managers also develop personal qualities that are helpful in performing the role efficiently.
In order to become a business manager, read through as many LinkedIn job descriptions as you can in fields of interest to you, generating a wordcloud like this one may be of some assistance in finding key words to put into your cover letter and CV when the time comes. Having a business management degree would also be of great benefit as we have covered last time in my Should You Study Business Management video, link in the description: https://youtu.be/OqWpF0Kgyic .
A social skill of a business manager is the ability to understand and know what each of their subordinate employee’s tasks are and how to work with each employee in working toward successful completion of such tasks. With this said, is business management a job for you? With an excellent salary, increasing job growth projection and plenty of opportunities, and great job satisfaction, one would have to align their career goals, salary expectations, work life balance and personal tolerance for project management. In terms of career path, business managers would typically be promoted to team lead after 1.54 years. Following from team lead, your team management skills would be expanded to organisational management skills, and you may progress to business management director depending on the size of the company.
If you would like a “day in the life” of a business manager video, please do comment down below and I will be happy to do so. With that said, thank you so much for watching and I will see you in the next one.
